Winter wedding: six ideas I would incorporate into my big day that you could too

Today I wanted to show you some ideas I would incorporate into my big day if I was having a winter wedding.

Winter Wedding Ideas

Winter wedding ideas:

Bridesmaid dresses

I not only love the dusky grey colour in the example I have selected, but I also love the idea of mixing faux fur shrugs, snoods, jackets and boleros with the softer textures of the bridesmaid dresses. I had a faux fur bridal bomber jacket made for my wedding.

Candles

It doesn’t have to be winter to be able to involve candles in your wedding, but if you were having a winter wedding how could you not? They create atmosphere, warmth, light, and an air of romanticism.

Favours: personalised baubles

I love these, what a great idea! Your guests leave with a lovely souvenir from your special day and every year they can remember it when they get the Christmas decorations out.

Fairy lights

Arguably safer than candles, particularly if you have lots of children at your wedding, but fairy lights are another easy way of creating a lovely warm atmosphere within your venue. You can hang them on walls, wrap them across surfaces and even put them in mason jars to use as center pieces. Fairy lights are an incredibly versatile decoration.

Fun Lighting

Some venues lend themselves so well to this kind of lighting, places such as barns with lovely high ceilings and big wooden beams that you could wrap festoon lights on/around etc.

If it is cold and nippy outside (not to mention dark super early), you want to create a warm intimate space inside that your guests want to be in and enjoying.

Flowers

Depending on your theme colours, flowers are a great way to bring in some more textures and can even be a way to incorporate some bolder tones. I would do a mixture of the two examples in the collage -my bridesmaids would have softer tones while I would be bolder as I would need something stronger against my white/ivory dress.

I’ve learnt that if you have the vision, there are an abundance of people, suppliers and venue options that can help bring your ideas to life. While putting on any event comes at a cost, regardless of budget, if you are prepared to hunt around you can totally find some great deals and bargains.

For the creatives out there, so much can be made by hand if you can put in the time before hand and recruit help from your bridesmaids, friends and family -that’s certainly what I’m planning on doing!

What are your winter wedding ideas?

Until next time x

Malmaison Hotel, Hockey European Championships & Getting Engaged

Hey Sweeties,

Firstly, apologies for being a bit absent this past week; every now and again you either need a bit of a break or your life takes an exciting turn for the better and everything goes out the window for a bit. The latter is me and if you have seen my Instagram, you’ll already know what I am going to tell you, but even if you have, you’ll want to know the details… so read on my Sweeties.

Hockey European Championships

Last weekend was one I have been looking forward to for months, I mean like since Christmas as Ian for a present bought me tickets to the hockey European Championships which have been taking place all this past week at Lee Valley/Olympic Park. We had tickets to watch three men’s games on Sunday, followed by an overnight stay at the Malmaison hotel in London.

Unfortunately, on arrival into London the heavens absolutely opened like I haven’t seen in a while and typically when I only have a pair of sandals with me. However despite this, the weather cleared for the afternoon to watch the games which was a huge relief! We watched France V Belgium, England V Netherlands and finally, Ireland V Germany and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The final game didn’t finish until quite late so we got back to the hotel probably around 10:30PM but to be honest, my memory of the evening is now a bit of a blur.

A Beautiful Wedding / Sweetie Rocks a Jumpsuit

Hey Sweeties,

Last weekend Ian and I ventured down to Devon for the much-anticipated wedding of our good friends Mark and Alex. They are a gorgeous couple and really quite quirky and creative in their own personal styles and ideas so I was itching to see how they were going to thread this into their wedding day.

For me, a wedding is the coming together of two families and it saddens me when you go to a wedding and there are little to no personal touches. As a guest, I like to see where they have come from and visually experience their personalities in all the elements of the day or at least where possible. Of course, not everyone is creative but I think even the most un-imaginative of people can pull something out of the bag on their wedding day.

The wedding of Mark and Alex was beautiful and oh my so them. The venue and day overall was wrapped in their tastes, their ideas and ultimately, it sang of them as a couple. A few days before while out on a walk with Ian I literally bored him stupid with all my predictions of what I think the day will be like and to be honest, I was pretty close on many of them. Although I don’t know Mark and Alex really well, I have a pretty good feel for how they are individually so things like Alex’s dress, I was correct in that it would be mermaid-esk whereby it was slimming until the bottom where it fanned out. Just gorgeous! Alex also wore a beautiful headpiece rather than a veil and Mark in true form opted for a chequered suit and gold shoes –sounds horrendous when I write it but honestly, it was fabulous!

The ceremony and reception were both held at the venue (Colehayes Park, Bovey Tracy). Although I am a Devon girl I was unfamiliar with the place but it was stunning; a big beautiful house set amongst several acres of land. There was a long winding driveway and on arrival we were greeted at the door by one of the ushers and prompted to walk through to the garden at the back. After a short amount of mingling and a drink or two, to our surprise we were told to walk to the bottom of the garden for the ceremony –yes, an outdoors ceremony! Behind an arched hedge were several rows of hay bales and at the front, a cute little covered stand/structure… words fail me today but to describe it basically it was like a mini bandstand, very much like what you would find in a park but smaller. Flowers decorated the front.

Of course the bride ran a bit fashionably late but who wouldn’t? With five bridesmaids and a gorgeous and impeccably well-behaved flower girl before her, Alex glided down the isle to meet her groom. The ceremony was tailored to them completely and following the I-do’s we had champagne, canapés and oysters (yes, really) in the garden before eventually being lead into a marquee for the wedding breakfast and reception.

Rather than let you in on all the elements of the day and give away all their clever and beautiful personal touches and ideas, I will include some photos to speak the rest of the words that I will refrain from writing. What I will say on a final note is that regular readers of this blog will be aware that a couple of months ago I wrote a post highlighting my quest for a jumpsuit. Well, albeit leaving it to the last moment of summer, I found a jumpsuit and rocked it at the wedding! Boom!

Enjoy!
