At Home Waxing – Smooth Appeal Water Soluble Wax for Legs and Body

Hey Sweeties,

Anyone else very lost in thought currently about holidays, or even just daydreaming about warmer weather, the kind that means us ladies can bin the tights and go bare-legged? I very much doubt it’s just me, I can’t blimmin’ wait for the ‘Beast from the East’ to finally do one and spring to come at us with full force, and a long hot summer to follow soon after (*does a dance to the sun Gods*)!

Hair removal is honestly one of if not the top thing about being a woman that I really frickin’ hate (periods a close second). In fact I hate it so much I am currently in the process of researching permanent hair removal solutions because I just cannot cope with doing this for the rest of my life, ha!

When I first began the process of hair removal in my early teens, I started with using hair removal cream before I fairly quickly moved onto shaving (read my review here about the Wilkinson Sword Hydro Silk Razor). The only time I have ever used waxing as a method of hair removal is in a salon carried out by a professional, so while the concept of at home waxing isn’t unfamiliar, it’s not actually something I have tried before myself. I was sent a tub of the Smooth Appeal Water Soluble Wax* last year, but at the time it wasn’t that easy for me to not shave my legs for a few weeks to allow enough hair growth to adequately use the product. That’s definitely a negative of waxing.

First Impressions

I love that to heat up the water soluble wax, you can just put it in the microwave (it advised about 40 seconds but my microwave is a bit old so it might have been closer to 60 seconds), which was extremely simple and actually very safe to do. Of course you still need to be careful because we’re still handling hot wax here, so common sense prevails.

The wax itself was easy to apply but I have to be honest, the little lolly stick supplied was pretty useless as it only allows a small area of coverage per application. My advice would be to get the large wooden stick spatulas as found/used in salons and use those instead, otherwise it’ll take you a day just to do one leg!

The supplied paper strips did a great job of gripping to the wax to remove hair, and were really easy to clean afterwards for re-use; that is actually a really good plus point for me!

The only two negatives I have about the Smooth Appeal Water Soluble Wax is

  1. It hurts (but that is waxing for you, and there’s no pain for gain ‘n all that);
  2. It is quite time consuming. I am sure with experience and practice, at home waxing can be done swiftly but I am unlikely to ever achieve that to be honest. For me, I am also just a bit chicken to cope with waxing my own body (legs and bikini line) and I need the no-nonsense approach of a professional… or a close friend. Definitely not husbands.

Overall Impression

Overall, while at home waxing still isn’t a method of hair removal I am likely to adopt, I do really rate the Smooth Appeal Water Soluble Wax; it’s affordable (a 300g pot is £9.99) and its claim about results lasting up to six weeks is most definitely true, and dare I say better than the waxing I have experienced to date at a salon?!

While I do prefer the hand of a professional, bikini line waxing for me really is not a dignified experience. You are provided with the most useless black pants to wear during the appointment, you honestly might as well just lie there nude because those ‘pants’ really do not cover much. Even though I will still need help, there are definite additional pros to at home waxing I think, more than just the product.
