The Mum-to-be Reading List: What Books I Read When I was Expecting

Hey Sweeties,

As a mum-to-be, during my pregnancy I wanted to ensure I was as informed as possible to prepare for having a baby. I spent several months avidly consuming books, podcasts, articles and attending the NCT Signature Antenatal Course and Baby & Child first aid course.

I had a very relaxed pregnancy, in fact, people said they had never known me to be so chilled out as I am such a stress head normally. Asides from the standard pregnancy nerves about wanting to be sure my baby was growing happy and healthy, I otherwise just knew to let my body do its thing.

The Mum-to-be reading list

  • Happy Mum Happy Baby: My Adventures into Motherhood by Giovanna Fletcher
  • Your Baby, Your Birth by Hollie de Cruz
  • How to Grow a Baby and Push it Out: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Pregnancy and Birth by Clemmie Hooper
  • What to Expect when you’re Expecting by Heidi Murkoff

Happy Mum, Happy Baby: My adventures into motherhood

I am trying to remember what first led me to Giovanna (Gi) and this book and I’m struggling, but all that aside I loved it. Gi talks through her personal experiences of being a mum and in doing so examines motherhood in a wider context.

Whether you’re a mum-to-be or doing this for the sixth time, I think everyone would take something from this honest approach to becoming a parent.

Your Baby, Your Birth

I had heard about hypnobirthing and it was something I wanted to pursue with my own labour. Hollie de Cruz was mentioned in Happy Mum Happy Baby which is how I was steered to her book.

I didn’t undertake a specific course in Hypnobirthing as I found this book and other online content to be enough. But this book certainly contributed to me having a positive pregnancy and so I would definitely recommend this book, and hynobirthing overall to any new mum-to-be.

How to Grow a Baby and Push It Out: Your no-nonsense guide to pregnancy and birth

It’s such a shame that in the months since reading this book and having my son, that Clemmie has disgraced herself in the online world. You can Google why, that’s not for me to go into.

However, I really loved this easily digestible, step-by-step no nonsense guide through the 40-weeks of pregnancy and everything that surrounds preparing for a baby. It’s more than likely I’ll pick this book up again when I need it for round two in the future.

What to expect when you’re expecting

I picked this book up when I saw it in a charity shop a good six months or so before falling pregnant, I just saw it as something useful to have on the bookshelf for reference.

It’s not a read in the same way the above mentioned books are, but it is certainly a useful resource about quite literally, what to expect when you’re expecting.

Are you a mum-to-be and have you read any of the books mentioned in this post? Do you have any other recommendations?

Until next time x
