Six Things to See and Do in Boston, MA | The Honeymoon Series

Hey Sweeties,

Boston, Massachusetts’ capital city, might not be the obvious honeymoon destination, many more commonly favouring destinations like the Maldives or Greece I think to relax and spend time with their other half after what has likely been a stressful time planning their wedding. But, if you’re not the kind of couple that likes to spend endless days on the beach or by the pool, a destination like Boston offers something different, with plenty of opportunity for exploration intermixed with places for downtime.

My husband and I went on our honeymoon last April-May, a year after our wedding. We spent two weeks visiting Boston, Washington D.C and Provincetown (Cape Cod) and it’s about time I shared with you all some highlights from our trip beginning with –

Six Things to See and Do in Boston, MA

Boston

The Freedom Trail

Regardless to whether you are limited for time or have all the time in the world, the Freedom Trail is probably the most practical place to begin your tour of Boston. The trail walks you along a 2.5 mile red brick-lined meander through the city, passing 16 of Boston’s key sites and attractions, teaching you plenty of history along the way. Anything you miss or want to spend more time exploring, you can go back to later.

Boston

Boston Common

You absolutely cannot visit Boston and not go through the common, you just can’t and if you do, what the hell were you thinking? Most well known for its stunning transformation come Fall (that’s Autumn for you and me), Boston common is a vast public park located downtown and it’s beautiful to walk through. We visited at the end of April – beginning of May and the trees were still covered in vibrant pink blossom.  If you’re visiting, definitely make sure you don’t miss seeking out the famous ducks, Mrs Mallard and her eight ducklings… supposed to be for the children but definitely something for everyone I think.

My next two points are sport related, and it doesn’t really matter if you’re a sports fan or not, America blimmin’ loves their sport so when in Rome ‘n all!

Baseball Game at Fenway Park

Fenway Park is home to the Boston Red Sox, the city’s American league baseball team. Until this trip, I had never really watched a baseball game but it had been something on my American bucket list, same for my husband, so we were excited at the opportunity to go.

Baseball as a game to be honest, is not what I was expecting, it’s surprisingly very low scoring which is never the impression you get when you see clips on TV and in films. In the UK, many people have a very low opinion about cricket, often citing it as boring, but at least it is always moving forward. You can sit through a whole game of baseball and not even see one home run! That being said, it’s still something I would definitely recommend experiencing if you get the opportunity.

Watch the Celtics at TD Garden

An additional point I will make about watching sport in America, is that they really know how to make the experience entertaining. The national anthem is always played at the beginning, and half-time and any other breaks during the game is filled with something fun, and often any military personnel are acknowledged.

I LOVED watching the basketball and my husband and I were really sad we couldn’t get the chance to see more games while we were in the States. Again, heartily recommend if you get the opportunity.

Boston

Harvard University

Located in Cambridge, accessible by crossing the Charles Bridge from Boston, visiting Harvard University and exploring Cambridge is an easy way to spend a morning or afternoon. The way to see it properly I think would be to befriend a student and get them to show you around because there is definitely more to the area than maybe is initially thought.

John F Kennedy Museum

This is a brilliant museum and it’s one of the few museums that I have come out of having really felt I learned something (of course you learn something in most museums but I really learned something here). As the name suggests, the museum documents the life of America’s 35th President from birth right up until his death. Highly recommend.

Have you ever been to Boston? Did you love it?

Until next time x
